Sheet flooring is a common choice for durability and good looks. Like most other flooring, it will become necessary to replace sections of it. Get the job done easily, and delaminate a replacement sheet flooring section by following these steps.

From Quick Guide: Always Underfoot: Floors
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Assure that the old flooring does not contain asbestos. Check the packaging that came with the sheet flooring or have testing preformed by a qualified testing organization. If asbestos is present, a qualified professional must be the one to remove the old flooring.

  2. Step 2

Locate the section of the flooring that requires replacement and mark the area that you need to remove using a pen or marker.

  3. Step 3

Cut around the sheet flooring in the area that needs replacement using a utility knife. Be sure to remain outside of the marked area so no marks remain on the good flooring that you don't need to replace.

  4. Step 4

Use the utility knife and protective gloves to remove any piece that sticks firmly to the floor and isn't removed easily on its own.

  5. Step 5

Remove the damaged sheet flooring section being certain not to scuff or damage the edges of the good floor. Find and remove any small pieces missed in the removal process so that no small sheet flooring pieces or chunks remain on the floor, leaving the empty area smooth and free from debris.

  6. Step 6

Protect the undamaged floor around the hole. Do this by putting masking tape around the edges that you previously cut to keep them from flaring up or ripping if bumped or pushed.

  7. Step 7

Clean the area thoroughly and allow the prepared area to dry completely before adhering new flooring to prevent mold and mildew from being present.

Tips & Warnings
  • Vinyl-asbestos tile and asphalt tile both contain asbestos fibers. Some asphalt cutback adhesives, sheet vinyl flooring and lining felt also contain these dangerous materials. Do not attempt to remove this type of flooring unless you have proper training.
