How to Apply Bias Tape to a Curved Seam in Three Easy Steps

How to Apply Bias Tape to a Curved Seam in Three Easy Steps thumbnail
Bias tape is easy to apply if you follow a few simple steps.

Bias tape has been used to finish raw edges on garments and furniture for centuries. The thing that makes bias tape different than any other simple strip of fabric is the way it is cut. Bias tape is cut at an angle, allowing the maximum stretch of the fabric to be used; it is this stretch factor that allows bias tape to mold so cleanly to raw edges, whether the seam is curved or straight.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and iron your tape. You will want to cut a section approximately 1 inch longer than the seam you would like to cover to provide room for trimming. Fold the tape in half right-side out, leaving a 1/16 inch overhang on one side. Iron flat.

    • 2

Pin the bias tape to your seam every two inches or so. Be sure that your longer fold is placed in the back, or wrong side of the fabric; and that you pin the entire length of the piece.

    • 3

Stitch the bias tape with front side facing up 1/16 inch away from the bottom of the tape. Remove the pins as you reach them while stitching and finish by trimming off extra bias tape with scissors.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some find it easiest to use bias tape that has already been pressed. You can find bias tape in both single and double fold types at your local fabric store or on-line.

  • Never sew over a pin, this can ruin your sewing machine.
