How to Replace an ABS Controller in a Saturn Ion

The anti-lock braking system (ABS) controller on the Saturn Ion prevents the brakes from locking during an emergency stop. The ABS controller reduces the braking force to any wheel that is rotating significantly more slowly than the others. If the ABS warning light comes on, you may need to replace the ABS, although this does not necessarily make your vehicle unsafe to drive.

Instructions

Determine which ABS controller your Saturn Ion will need. You'll want to be sure the new controller is compatible with your make and model of Ion. All versions of the Ion have been equipped with ABS since its debut in 2003.

Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. Remove the transmission control module from the bracket of the brake pressure modulator valve, if needed, to access the ABS controller. Clean any dirt or other debris from the area between the ABS controller and brake pressure modulator valve with a clean cloth.

Disconnect the electrical connector for the ABS controller and pump motor. Remove the four mounting screws for the ABS controller with a socket wrench. Separate the ABS controller from the modulator valve by carefully pulling the two units apart. Clean the sealing surface of the modulator valve with denatured alcohol.

Install the ABS controller onto the modulator valve. Replace the four mounting screws for the ABS controller. Use a torque wrench to tighten the screws in an X pattern to 27 inch-lb torque. Connect the electrical connectors for the pump motor and ABS controller. Replace the transmission control module, if you previously removed it.

Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and clear any faults so the ABS light goes off.
