Things You'll Need:
- Tread wear gauge
-
Step 1
Check your Camaro tires and see if there is a tire tread wear indicator, or "TWI." These initials should be somewhere on the sidewall of the tire and should have an arrow pointing from the sidewall to the tread of the tire.
-
Step 2
Locate the spot indicated by the "TWI" and look carefully at the tread in this location. You will find a barely visible band that goes across the width of the tread.
-
Step 3
Look to see if this area is smooth. If there is no tread in this area of the tire, it's time to replace it with a new tire.
-
Step 1
Find the legal amount of tread required by your state's Department of Transportation, or simply contact your Chevy dealership and ask what the recommended tread depth specification is for your Camaro. Generally, however, the legal minimum is 2/32" (1.6 mm), but a minimum of 3/32 is recommended for safety.
-
Step 2
Buy a tread wear gauge from your local automotive store. This should be located in the tools next to the tire pressure gauges or possibly next to the valve stems.
-
Step 3
Insert the tread wear tool into the crease of the tread. Start at one edge of the tire and take five or six measurements along the width of the tire tread. Note the lowest measurement, as this indicates the least amount of tread.
-
Step 4
Repeat this action for all four tires. Note any uneven wear or common tread wear between multiple tires. This may indicate alignment problems or tire balance problems.
-
Step 5
Replace tires with too little tread left. The Original tires for the Camaro are 235/55-16.
