The VW Passat has many upgradable features and one of the most popular is the factory stereo system. Upgrading the sound system in your VW Passat is one of the easier car projects. Swapping out the factory stereo for a new head unit gives you better sound and newer features. Changing out the stereo in a VW passat requires a special VW key and about 30 minutes.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • VW radio removal tool
  • VW radio mounting kit
  • Wiring harness adaptor
  • VW antenna adaptor
  1. Step 1

Open the hood and disconnect the positive battery cable.

  2. Step 2

Remove the trim ring around the stereo by prying at one corner until the clips disconnect. Slide the VW radio removal tools into the slots, one on each side of the radio. Push the tools toward each other until you hear a click.

  3. Step 3

Pull the head unit from the VW Passat dash and disconnect the wires from the back of the radio. Slide the new stereo into the VW radio mounting kit, which is a thin metal cover and secure it per the manufacturer's instructions. Most adaptors have screws to hold the stereo in place however some have clips, which engage automatically.

  4. Step 4

Connect the wiring harness adaptor to the original harness and slide the VW antenna adaptor onto the original wire. Plug the wiring harness adaptor and antenna into the back of the new stereo and slide the entire assembly into the dash until it clicks into place.

  5. Step 5

Reconnect the positive battery cable and turn the radio on. Test the head unit features and the car speakers to ensure they are working properly. Replace the trim ring around the radio.
