Although the common time to work is nine to five, many people work a graveyard shift. You work a graveyard shift in the middle of the night--hence the name. Graveyard shifts start at eight PM or later and end eight hours later. Some jobs that you can do on this shift are security guard, retail jobs--when stores are open 24 hours--factory jobs, nursing jobs and prisons jobs.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Locate a job that you can do on the graveyard shift. Search for resorts that need security guards 24 hours a day. Check out retail stores open 24 hours a day for a cashier, stocker or custodian position. Look into banks who have people process their business for the day after hours, grocery stores that are open 24 hours and factory jobs.

  2. Step 2

Adjust for the graveyard shift. One of the biggest drawbacks to working a graveyard shift is sleeping during the day rather than at night--and then adjusting to sleeping at night when you are off. Be practical--either sleep afternoons or evenings before you go to work or learn to sleep during the day, and keep the schedule even on your days off.

  3. Step 3

Consider the benefits of working the graveyard shift. Most graveyard positions pay more in order to get people to work these positions. Look into the various positions in order to find the ones that offer the best salaries.

  4. Step 4

Explore the rewards of working the graveyard shift. Choose a position where you can get a promotion easier since not as many people are competing for the positions. Consider the benefits of not having as many supervisors around when you're working or having to attend as many meetings as they do during the day.

  5. Step 5

Decide to work the graveyard shift to avoid the traffic. Since your work day starts at eight PM or later and ends eight hours later, you'll be traveling when others are at home and therefore not have the traffic that plagues people during the day.
