Step 1
Replace existing wall fixtures with wall scones for the easiest installation. By replacing the existing fixtures, it isn't necessary to drill new holes in the wall. Make sure the wall sconces have been rewired if using antique fixtures. Old wiring in antique fixtures can overheat and cause a fire. If using a reproduction antique sconce, read the wiring diagram first to become familiar with all the parts and gather the recommended tools.
-
Step 2
Turn off the electric to the existing wall fixture. Make sure the light switch is turned off, and the breaker for the room is also turned off. Remove the globe and light bulb of the existing fixture, then loosen the screws that hold the fixture to the wall.
-
Step 3
Make a note of which wire is the ground wire before you loosen the wires, especially in an older house. If your reproduction antique wall sconces are made in the US, the fixture will have a green ground wire. Many foreign made fixtures use a yellow wire as the ground, in which case the ground wire in the wall is connected to the yellow wire in the fixture. Follow the wiring diagrams included with the wall sconces to be sure your electric wiring is properly connected for safety.
-
Step 4
Connect the wires by using plastic wire connectors. The wires are twisted together first, then the plastic connector is placed over the twisted wires securely. After all the wires for the wall sconces have been connected properly, push the wires back into the box in the wall.
-
Step 5
Install the faceplate of the antique wall sconces, following the installation instructions. Most reproduction wall sconces include matching screws for installation. Many wall sconces, especially antique reproductions state "install as shown" in the instructions. This is because some wall sconces can only be installed in one position. Many antique wall sconces have the large shade facing upwards, to shield the original gas flame. After the wall sconces are assembled, turn the breaker back on for a beautiful ambient light.
