Terra cotta is a natural fired clay. It is a durable type of tile to use near a swimming pool. Terra cotta is available in a variety of colors, shapes, patterns and sizes. You can use a single style or multiple styles to get the look you want for your pool area.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Measure the area. You will need this information so you can order the appropriate amount of terra cotta pool tiles. You need to know the total area in which the tiles must be laid. You will also have to measure the distance from one obstacle to the next. For example, if you have trees in the yard, you have to measure the distance around each tree and from tree to tree. It may be helpful for you to draw a diagram of your pool area, including landscaping obstacles.

  2. Step 2

Decide on the style. Terra cotta tiles are available in square tiles, rectangular tiles, round tiles and a variety of other shapes. You need to consider the layout of your pool area and the landscaping around it. Pick a color, pattern and style that matches the landscaping.

  3. Step 3

Design the area. Make sure that you draw in the pool and any other features that will affect the look of your design. If you want to include patterned tiles in a subtle way, consider using solid colored tiles with a patterned tile strategically placed in your design. Keep in mind that, in most cases, you will need coping tiles, which are also called edging tiles, around the edge of the pool. In addition to providing a nice visual effect, these tiles also make it safer for swimmers to enter the pool as many are non slip and feature rounded edges.

  4. Step 4

Purchase your tiles (see Resources). Make sure that you buy tiles appropriate for outdoor use. Some terra cotta tiles may be damaged when they are exposed to sunlight. In some cases, you can use a sealant to protect the tiles.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you order your terra cotta pool tiles, order at least a dozen more than what you think you will need in case some tiles break or if you need a couple of extras.
  • If you purchase your tiles online, consider using a credit card. In most cases, a credit card will provide you with more protection than a debit card or check.
