Just like any profitable collections, one should beware of fake coins when buying silver eagle dollars. Most fake coins can be spotted easily with a little knowledge.

    A true silver coin will will admit a high pitched ring sound when clicked together with another coin or dropped on the table. Only tap the coin softly or drop a few inches to avoid damaging the coin.

  2. Step 2

    A silver dollar has a distinctive top layer that is firm but not to hard or soft. Many fake coins will have soapy feeling. Some fake coin makers will ad the top layer but most do not bother.

    Learn what a real silver eagle dollar looks like and trust your instincts. If a coin does not look right walk away. With today's technology, coin fakes are becoming harder to spot. They will have all the signs of a real silver dollar but a few things might seem off.

  4. Step 4

    Coins that do not have grooves covering the edges should cause some alarm. Genuine coins with this error are very rear. If the edges appear to have been filed to cover up a groove it is probably fake.

  5. Step 5

    Look for impurities of a silver coin with a magnify glass. Many fakes will will show impurities of other metal when looking at the edges and where the rim meets the edge.

    When in doubt, weigh a silver dollar to determine legitimacy of the coin. Many fraudulent coins are off weight. A genuine silver eagle dollar weighs 31.101 grams, no more no less.
