Step 1
The first thing you will need to do is to find a "Milk Bank" these are the places that are involved in collecting and distributing milk. The best way to find milk banks is to visit one of the following website's...
1. National Milk Bank- www.nationalmilkbank.org
2. International Breast Milk Project- www.breastmilkproject.org
If you cannot find what you are looking for here... visit or call your local hospital, they should be able to get you on the right track. -
Step 2
You will need to have your blood tested... you can do this at your local hospital... the main things the milk banks want to rule out are those with Hepatitis, HIV, or other diseases.
-
Step 3
You will qualify if you are generally in good health. You cannot be a smoker, show signs of substance abuse, or be on any regular medications (such as insulin)... anything that could interfere with the breast milk could be a problem.
-
Step 4
It is a good idea to visit your regular doctor for a routine exam... just to make sure that you are in good health and it will not cause you any problems if you choose to donate.
NOTE- During this visit you may want to ask your doctor for a copy of the exam records that verify you are in good health, this may save you time later on. -
Step 5
If you have a child your child may need to have a "check-up" to make sure that your own child is growing at a healthy rate and will not be deprived if you choose to donate.
-
Step 6
This brief "how-to" should help get you on the right track, however if you have more questions... visit one of the web sites listed above, they have staff on hand who can not only help you make the right decision, but also guide you through the whole process.
