Buying lead free, safe toys for kids can be a challenge, but it's a lot easier with some direction. Most toys come from China or other countries that have a history of poisoning toys to increase profits. Here is a great way to make sure the toys you buy this year won't hurt the little ones you love.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet
  1. Step 1

    BUY AMERICAN

Not only is buying American good for the nation's economy, it's also a good way to make sure the toys you buy for Christmas meet safety standards set forth by the federal government.

  2. Step 2

    VISIT HEALTHY TOYS ONLINE

Healthytoys.org is a non-profit organization devoted to truth and safety in design, manufacturing, and labeling of toys for kids of all ages. HealthyToys performs independent safety tests and chemical analysis of common toys to determine their true levels of toxic materials, like lead.

Healthy Toys provides a list of the best and worst tested toys, reviews of independently tested products, and will even test specific toys upon request.

Healthy Toys is a non-profit site and is free and easy for all to use.

  3. Step 3

    SLOW DOWN, CHECK FOR RECALLS

Don't be so eager to finish wrapping gifts that you forget the importance of safe toys for kids. When you find a toy you would like to purchase for a child, stop. Take a moment and look online for recalls, customer and agency reviews. Look for reviews of the manufacturer and possible recalls of other toys they have produced. A company with an extensive history of unsafe toys will be more likely to have future unsafe toys on the market. Only when you're sure a toy is safe should you make the purchase.

  4. Step 4

    NOT JUST LEAD

Lead is a potentially fatal toxin that most of us are aware is a threat to our child's safety. However, there are many more toxins that also pose a threat to the safety of kids. Cadmium, chlorine, mercury, and many more toxic substances common in toys pose serious risk to children. Minimize the risk by learning and make sure the toys you give at Christmas time won't cause any harm.

  5. Step 5

    SHOP ONLINE

Shopping online isn't just more comfortable, it also give you the opportunity to research AS YOU SHOP. Additionally, there is a wider variety of healthy toys online than your local department store. Check out the healthy (and often less expensive) Christmas gift options online and keep your favorite tot's toys safe, healthy, and fun.

Tips & Warnings
  • DON'T TRUST NAMES AND LABELS ~ Just because you recognize the brand name or the label says it's a safe toy, that doesn't make it really safe. Look to independent sources to verify the safety of toys, especially when looking for lead free toys.
