Love that letha!

Wearing a leather jacket is a slick, easy way to pull your outfit together. Throughout the years, I have updated my leather jacket a few times, but there's always one (or three!) in my wardrobe. Here's what I look for in a leather jacket and how to choose the perfect one!

      My Bagatelle Baby!

For the best options, listen to your Mama when she told you, "You better shop around!" Wilson's jackets are a good, affordable option. For real deals, go to Marshall's. I found a wonderful Bagatelle Neiman Marcus jacket for half the original price!

If you are looking to purchase only one leather jacket, go for black! It's sleek and timeless and makes you look like a rebel. If you still have that fringed black leather jacket from the 80's (I had one too), it's time to update. The hottest look right now is a cropped shrunken leather with a motorcycle look as seen on Mary Kate Olsen and Joy Bryant. Pair this "hard" jacket with softer romantic pieces for a lesson in contrasts!

      It should feel like butta!

One of my main criteria for leather is softness. Look for softer leathers. Harder leather won't necessarily get much softer.

Look for interesting details like a ruffled color, a hood, buttons and zippers. They give your jacket personality and interest!

      No Pepa leather

If you can splurge on a second, try a cool color. I am loving metallic leathers and rich burgundy tones! Stick to neutrals as bright colors might look a little Salt n Pepa circa 1980's. Sorry Sandy!

      Save loot on leather

Scout out thrift shops. I scored an Ann Taylor burgundy leather blazer for 9 bucks! There are real deals to be had on gently used leathers. And you have an instant worn in look right away!

Make sure your jacket is a good proportion. All jackets should hit at the hip or above. Too long makes you look like Eddie Murphy from The Golden Child! (too many 80's references in this article)

Fit is important. Make sure the arms are not too tight. My litmus test involves putting both arms forward like a walking zombie! If the arms feel too tight, don't buy it. Also, avoid jackets that are too big. A fitted leather jacket always looks better than one that's too big!
