stop a horse from rearing.

Riding a horse is fun and enjoyable but can turn dangerous if your mount starts to rear. Even the safest horses may rear when frightened or hurt. Be prepared to redirect your horse and not get yourself and horse injured.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Imagine you are riding in the ring or out on the trail and your horse starts acting up and rearing. What do you do? Step one DON'T panic. remain calm and keep a firm seat in the saddle.

  2. Step 2

Start by asking your horse to move forward. Then try to make your horse bend. A horse cannot rear when they are bending. To get your horse to bend pull their head around as if touching your toe. Keep asking them to move forward. Turn in circles. Speak calmly to your horse and reassure them.

  3. Step 3

Try to locate the cause of the rear. IF it is fright, you need to help them overcome their fear, if it is behavioral get with your trainer and work your horse though it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remain calm
  • Don't smack your horse to "punish" him/her, it may make things worse.
  • Turn circles until the rearing stops and horse calms down.
  • As a last resort jump off, but realize your horse just learned how to get you off their back.
  • A rearing horse is very dangerous to you and your riding friends.
  • Get professional help if your horse rears often.
  • Have fun riding!
