Social Security Card and Number
Social Security Card and Number

New rules from the Social Security Administration, created with national security in mind, have tightened the requirements for getting a Social Security Card with a unique Social Security Number. Here's what you need to do to start the online process, and get a Social Security Number of your own, or a first Social Security card for your child.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Complete an application for a Social Security Card with your own Social Security Number. The application is online. The Resources section includes a link to the Social Security application.

  2. Step 2

You will need documents to prove your age, identity and citizenship or immigration status. In general, these include your original birth certificate (or a certified copy) and, for those old enough, a driver's license. Non-citizens also need immigration status documents. Read the application for full details of what documents to provide.

  3. Step 3

You're best off bringing the application and documents directly to a regional Social Security center in your area. Use the Social Security Office locator to find the nearest center. Or, call 1-800-772-1213, for assistance. However, it is possible to handle your request through the mail, though it will mean sending your original documents (they will be returned).

  4. Step 4

The Resources section includes full details of applying for a new Social Security Card in order to get your own Social Security Number.

Tips & Warnings
  • The Social Security Administration has offices around the world, for US citizens and residents in other countries who need assistance.

on 11/3/2008 Tes sir! I had lost my social security card years ago, and had never replaced it. Then, my new employer wouldn't hire me unless I did replace it. It was so easy, just like your article points out. 5 stars*****.
