It's Houses--Not Hice.

Every computer needs a mouse. Choose the right one.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Mouses to consider--Not mice... oh, wait...
  1. Step 1

Do you want a trackball, ball, optical, or laser mouse? The ball mouse has been replaced by optical and laser, while the trackball remains an option. Optical is less accurate than laser, but less expensive. Laser is more accurate, and usually more expensive.

  2. Step 2

Does your computer support the mouse connector? If the mouse uses a PS/2 connector, check the back of your computer for a circular, green port.

  3. Step 3

How does it look? Look through as many mice as you can before buying.

  4. Step 4

How many buttons do you want? Some mice have extra buttons that allow you to navigate forward and back while browsing the web, or even program certain actions to the buttons. If you're a gamer, programmable buttons are essential.

  5. Step 5

Do you want a wired or wireless mouse? The wireless mouse is becoming more common, and is about the same cost as the wired mouse. If going with a wireless mouse, you'll need batteries. Rechargeable mice are also available, but more expensive.

  6. Step 6

How does it feel? Make sure it's comfortable, or at least looks comfortable if testing it isn't possible. Make sure you can return the mouse if it's not.

Tips & Warnings
  • Need a mouse pad? Check the resources to learn how to choose one. How about a keyboard? Check the resources.
  • If you don't buy a rechargeable wireless mouse, consider buying rechargeable batteries.
  • For a listing of some of the best mice, check the resources.
  • If you buy a wireless mouse, and are on a wireless network, they could interfere causing lower network speeds, or even make it stop working. Then again, most systems work fine with a wireless mouse.

on 3/10/2009 There is a whole lot more to consider for choosing a mouse. For example, if you travel with a computer, chances are, you will need a highly portable mouse. If you use the (laptop) computer in a "no desk" situation, you may need a special mouse that can be used on you sleeves or pants. Do look around and collect as much information as you can before deciding, as new mice (in design and functions) will keep coming out. Do not overlook Track Ball or Pen Mouse, they serve their purposes. And, as always, take care yourself and don't think that mouse won't hurt you. If you use the mouse intensively like me, sooner or later your wrist, arm and shoulder will hurt. That why I now use both a regular mouse and a pen mouse and switch them around.
