reduce risk of SIDS

SIDS stands for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Here are a few tips to go by that will help reduce the risk for your baby

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Your memory
  1. Step 1

Don't use bumpers inside the crib. They look adorable and they come in the crib sets, but don't use them until baby can willingly turn his head and body. Baby can move himself around while sleeping and get his face caught against the material.

  2. Step 2

Don't use blankets. Use a sleeper to keep your baby warm. Baby can pull blankets around his head and suffocate.

  3. Step 3

Don't let baby sleep on his tummy. Always put baby on his back. He could suffocate if he sleeps on his tummy. Once he can roll over, he may prefer sleeping in a certain position.

  4. Step 4

If a caregiver smokes, take it outside. Wear a seperate jacket or pullover when going outside to smoke. If baby is held while caregiver is wearing the same shirt he smoked in, baby can breath in the smoke. It can kill him.

Tips & Warnings
  • Once baby is old enough to roll over by himself, he will probably automatically roll over onto his tummy. By then, he should be safe. He can most likely move himself with ease.
  • This goes for using bumpers and blankets. You won't want to add a lot of blankets, but one should be fine. A bumper should be safe once he can move himself around.
  • It's best to buy a crib set when baby can roll over by himself.
