Catching drills are hard to teach because it takes more effort to be a play the catching position than any other position on the field. Good catching techniques are not taught at a young age and this has allowed for bad habits to become more evident as a catcher becomes older.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Three types of sports balls (Golf Balls, Tennis Balls, and Baseballs).
  • Bucket
  • 2 people
  1. Step 1

Have a player sit on the bucket, facing the other person. One person will be the thrower and one will be the receiver. The person on the bucket is the receiver/catcher. The bucket allows for a player to sit comfortable while doing the drill. This will allow for players to work longer without getting tired.

  2. Step 2

The thrower/pitcher/coach will then throw different sports balls to the catcher. It is best to start with a tennis ball because it is easy to catch and builds confidence. Use the other sports balls mentioned. Golf Balls and Baseballs

  3. Step 3

The thrower then should switch balls so the catcher/receiver will be forced to catch each ball the same way. The different weights, sizes and textures of each ball generates concentration and creates a game.

  4. Step 4

This drill can be done with no glove. As the player is ready, let the catcher/receiver use a glove still using each ball. Although a player never plays a game without a glove it is a great training technique to practice without one. This will allow for understanding what goes on with the hand in the glove.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not over use a drill ever. If drills are boring change them.
  • Use proper equipment. Catchers should get used to the gear they will wear.
