Instructions

    • 1

Remove all appliances from your countertop and any other objects.

    • 2

Now remove any existing countertop edging such as wood. If you are planning on reusing the wood edge, be very careful prying this off. If the edging is formica also, you may remove it with the rest of the formica in step 4.

    • 3

Put in your ear plugs. The next step is loud!

    • 4

You will use the wrecking bar and hammer to remove the formica from the plywood. This is going to be a time consuming process if the formica is heavily glued. Find a good spot to wedge the straight edge of the wrecking bar under the formica; look for any area where the formica is coming loose on the edge.

    • 5

Begin to beat on the curve of the wrecking bar with the hammer, wedging the bar under the formica. Pry the formica loose.

    • 6

Try to avoid denting the plywood underneath as much as possible. If there is heavy glue, some tearing and shredding of the plywood is normal. Throw the old formica in the trash can as you work.

    • 7

Once all the formica is removed, take the broom and sweep the countertop removing any loose slivers of plywood. It is not necessary to sand the plywood if you want to tile. The tile mastic will fill in the gaps. Sweep up any slivers that may have spilled onto the floor. You don't want to step on these later.

    • 8

Now your surface is ready to be tiled.
