Unfortunately accidents do happen. If you are in an automobile accident be prepared with your Car Insurance information and a checklist of what to do. The steps you take after an accident can save you many headaches down the road.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take a deep breath. Do not panic. Turn on your hazard lights. Decide if it is safe to move off of the road.

  2. Step 2

Call 911 if anyone is injured. Assist as needed but do not move the victim unless there is a possibility of a car fire or other danger.

  3. Step 3

Only talk to the police and your automobile insurance agent about the accident. Do not admit fault. Anything that you say could be used against you.

  4. Step 4

Call the police and if possible your insurance agent. Ask the police officer for your accident report number. This you will need later.

  5. Step 5

You will need to write down the following information of the other driver:
    Name, address and phone number.
    Who owns the car?
    Their driver’s license number.
The license plate number, year and make of the car.
Their Automobile Insurance Company and their policy number.

  6. Step 6

Don’t forget the names and phone numbers of witness’ and passengers.

  7. Step 7

Draw a sketch of the accident. If you have a camera take pictures of the cars, the road conditions, street signs and anything else that you might need to have later.

Tips & Warnings
  • Let your automobile insurance handle the details. Even if it looks like nothing is wrong, injuries or hidden damage can show up days later.
  • Remember not to admit that it was your fault. Leave that to the experts.
