Pet food can attract not only your own pets, but bugs, moths and rodents. Storing it well will keep it fresh, safe and reduce the chance of attracting unwanted pests.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Don't keep bags of pet food in attics, cellars or garages. The rodents will find it quickly and be slow to leave even once you remove the food. This goes for all types of pet food whether for dogs, cats, fish, birds, rabbits or any other food for a pet.

  2. Step 2

Put food in strong plastic or vinyl containers. Those made for foodstuffs are best. Open bags of pet food attract problems by releasing food odors, are easily spilled, and don't keep food fresh over time.

  3. Step 3

Check into some of the interesting pet food containers being sold by pet supply shops and on the internet. Some can fit into odd spaces and others can even be stacked.

  4. Step 4

Keep extra pet food on hand in case of future emergencies, but replace it every couple of months before it goes stale. Open food should be used right away. Sometimes food moth eggs will be in the food itself -- no danger whatsoever to your pet -- but if they have time to hatch out, they can be messy and difficult to get rid of.

  5. Step 5

In short, pet food should be kept fresh and stored in tight, clean containers.

on 11/2/2008 Yes, good tips, and pets can eat into food bags left out. Some plastic containers have neat spouts and serving / measuring scoops with them too!5*
