Spot a Liar

This is taken from several scientific studies on lying, as discussed in the excellent book "Quirkology" by Richard Wiseman. The book is not only about lying, it covers many other interesting facets of human behavior.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You'll Need:

  • Ears
  1. Step 1

Don't rely on visual clues. Apparently, these are easy for a liar to fake. Looking you straight in the eye is no indication of truthfulness. The reliable clues come from what a liar says.

  2. Step 2

Liars tend to say less and with fewer details, probably to avoid getting trapped by any inconsistency while lying. Whereas a truth-teller may get carried away and ramble on carelessly about the subject.

  3. Step 3

Liars rarely refer to themselves or their feelings about the subject.

  4. Step 4

Liars sometimes seem to remember the smallest trivia, which a normal person would have forgotten. Rather than admit they don't remember what drink they had with breakfast on Tuesday three weeks ago, a liar will make up an answer.
