Make Mile High Pizza Dough from Scratch

This delicious dough makes enough for two 16" pizzas. Let's have a pizza party!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 pkg. active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 heaping Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup solid shortening
  1. Step 1

Dissolve 1 packet of active dry yeast in 1 cup warm water. Warm tap water will work fine, be sure water isn't too hot. Set aside. In a large bowl, combine 1 heaping Tbsp. sugar, 1 tsp. salt and 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour. Stir yeast mixture into flour mixture.

  2. Step 2

Add 1/4 cup shortening and knead dough with hands until smooth. Cover and let rise in a warm place. Punch down once when dough doubles. Cover and let rise a second time.

  3. Step 3

Roll pizza dough out onto pan and top with your favorite toppings. Our family enjoys different flavors of shredded cheese, onions, black olives, tomatoes, minced garlic, bacon, ham, pepperoni, green peppers and sausage. It's your pizza creation, have fun trying new flavor combinations.

Bake at 425 degrees for 20 minutes. Crust should be lightly browned and cheese should be melted and bubbly. Enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • For a crispier crust, bake dough for 10 minutes prior to adding toppings.
