Traveling alone is a wonderful experience. It allows us to do what we want without worrying about everyone else’s plans. The problem with traveling alone is that the solo traveler also seems like an easier pray for pickpockets and criminals. With some common sense and simple precautions, any traveler can feel safer on their own.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • An adventurous spirit
  • Common sense
  • A desire to have fun
  1. Step 1

After you make your plans and have an itinerary, share it with someone you trust. This is as much for your own safety as it is so people can reach you in case of an emergency.

  2. Step 2

If possible, take a cellular phone that works at your destination. This may require purchasing an interchangeable chip that allows your phone to work abroad. You can also use the internet to stay in touch with your contact at home.

  3. Step 3

Once you arrive at your destination, use reliable and safe transportation. Most countries regulate taxis and require that the drivers display a license. If you need help, airport and hotel personnel are always able and willing to help you. Get the phone number of a reliable taxi company and always carry it on you, this is helpful if you are stranded somewhere.

  4. Step 4

Do not dress like a tourist and save the souvenir apparel for when you get home. Even if you do not think you look like a tourist, look at the locals to assess the dress code. Sometimes it helps to go online before a trip and find out if people dress differently than what you are used to.

  5. Step 5

Always keep an eye on your belongings. Women should try to use shoulder bags that hang across the upper body and towards the front. A purse hanging behind you is easy pickings for a pickpocket. Men should also be aware and place their wallet in their front pockets.

  6. Step 6

Do not be afraid to use the hotel’s personnel. They know their city and understand the requirements of their guests. Consider them your best allies.

  7. Step 7

If you are not sure about how safe it is to go somewhere, take a tour or a cruise…You are still traveling on your own but not completely alone.

Tips & Warnings
  • Skip the fanny packs and camera bags…They scream “I’m a tourist.” Many companies are aware of this fact and make camera bags that are discreet and look like backpacks or messenger bags.
  • Always check in with your at-home contact. Nothing ruins a vacation like having your friends and family think that you disappeared.
  • Worry about your safety but do not get paranoid. Simply pay attention to your surroundings and remember to have fun.
