Things You'll Need:
- Car
- Odometer
- Calculator
-
Step 1
I recommend you start with a full tank of gas to get the most accurate reading you can. However a full tank is not necessary.
-
Step 2
Reset your odometer(the mileage counter) on your dash, usually located next to the speedometer.
-
Step 3
Drive your usual routes until you need to stop and fill up the tank. The tank does not need to be empty, but the more gas you've used the more accurate your gas mileage will be.
-
Step 4
Fill your tank full and note how many gallons you've pumped. Look at your odometer and note how many miles you've driven.
-
Step 5
Now take the number of miles you've driven divided by the number of gallons you pumped and you have your cars miles per gallon. For example, if I drove 200 miles and put in 10 gallons of gas, my MPG is 20(200/10=20).
