Rice to Water ratio is fairly easy to calculate for any rice recipe. White rice, brown rice, long-grain and short grain rice all can be easily cooked on the stove for any rice recipe. It is easy to learn how to cook rice and make rice dishes. Rice to water ratio varies depending on the type of rice you cook and the method used to cook rice. How to cook rice for rice dishes and rice recipes is fairly the same no mater what rice recipe you choose.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1
    White Rice
    White Rice

    White Rice to water: use 1 1/2 to 2 cups of water per cup of long-grain white rice. The fresher the rice the less water is needed. White rice usually takes 25 to 30 minutes to cook rice. Bring water to boil. Reduce heat. Cook rice until desired tenderness.

    Brown Rice
    Brown Rice

    Brown Rice to water: use 2 cups of water per cup of long-grain brown rice. Brown rice usually takes 40 to 50 minutes to cook. Bring water to boil. Reduce heat. Cook rice until desired tenderness.

  3. Step 3
    Short Grain Rice
    Short Grain Rice

    Short-grain Rice to water: use 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 cups of water per cup of short-grain rice. Short grain rice usually cooks faster than long grain rice. Short-grain rice usually can be cooked in 20 minutes. Bring water to boil. Reduce heat. Cook rice until desired tenderness.

  4. Step 4
    Cooked Rice
    Cooked Rice

    One cup of uncooked rice will make about 3 cooks of cooked rice. Rice can be seasoned with about any type of seasoning and served with any type of food. Search the internet for new rice recipes and rice dishes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add boulin or seasoning to the water to make flavored rice dishes.
  • If you cook a lot of rice consider buying a rice cooker to cook rice.
  • Reduce heat after water boils to prevent rice from burning.
