Homemade Candy Apples

Here is a great and simple recipe for making a famous carnival treat - the candy apple.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 10 medium sized red apples
  • 1 Caramel Apple Kit
  • 8 oz Milk
  • 2 1/2 cup Sugar
  • Red Food Color (optional)
  • Candy Thermometer
  • 2qt Sauce Pan
  • Cookie sheet (lined with lightly greased wax paper)
  1. Step 1

    Wash and dry the apples.

  2. Step 2

Mix caramel package contents with milk and heat until it starts boiling at medium temperature. Stir in sugar.

  3. Step 3
    Add food color
    Add food color

Add red food color and continue stirring candy apple caramel mixture until it boils.

  4. Step 4

To save time, insert a stick into each apple while the caramel is cooking.

  5. Step 5

Check mixture temperature until it reaches 242 degrees Fahrenheit. (If you don't have a thermometer, just drop a small amount into cold water. If it balls up when you roll it between your fingers, it is at the right temperature).

  6. Step 6

Once mixture reaches the right temperature, remove from heat and let cool for about 10 minutes.

  7. Step 7

Dip each apple into the caramel mixture. Twirl slowly and allow the excess caramel to drop back into the sauce pan.

  8. Step 8

Place apples on cookie sheet and place in refrigerator to let the candy harden onto the apple, creating a red outer shell.

  9. Step 9

Voila!! Enjoy your homemade candy apples.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can roll the candy apple in a bowl of chopped nuts before cooling if you want to dress up your candy apple.
  • Leave the red food coloring out is you only want caramel candy apple.
  • To clean up - soak utensils and sauce pan in warm soapy water.
