Sudden tire blowout at high speeds is very dangerous and scary to the driver. This article gives step by step instruction on how to handle this situation to avoid serious damage.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Sudden tire blowout on the freeway or at high speeds is very dangerous. The sound itself would scare the driver into harsh braking and steering. These are our instincts in dangerous situation. However in this case, it's possibly the worse thing you can do.

  2. Step 2

The most important thing in this situation is to keep your cool. Don't panic. It is easier said than done. Sudden tire blowout at high speeds is very dangerous and keeping your cool would help you escape a very dangerous situation relatively unharmed.

  3. Step 3

Very slightly accelerate following the sudden tire blowout. The reason is the car will pull itself toward the flat tire, so acceleration will keep the car's momentum and avoid jumping over to the next lane where there might be a car.

  4. Step 4

Firmly control the steering (use two hands), put on the emergency flashers, ease off the gas. And try to pull off from traffic. Gently ease into braking and come to a stop.

  5. Step 5

Always examine your car's tire for pressure, wear, and damage. By keeping an eye on your tire, you can avoid dangerous situations such as a sudden tire blowout on the freeway.
