Break a Habit, or Replace a Bad Habit With a Good One

So, you've got a bad habit? This list will help you get rid of your bad habit, and maybe even replace your nasty old habit and replace it with a new one.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Identify your bad habit. Get used to the idea of getting rid of this habit. If you plan to replace your negative habit with a positive one, plan what the replacement habit will be.

  2. Step 2

Get a calendar. Set a goal of thirty days. Plan to stop your habit for at least thirty days. As each successful day passes, check off the day. If you mess up one day, add two more days to your calendar. This will encourage you to not mess up.

  3. Step 3

Give yourself something to work towards. Plan a reward to give yourself when you complete thirty days without indulging your habit.

  4. Step 4

If you're going to replace your bad habit with a good one, keep whatever you need for your new habit with you at all times. If your old habit involves something that you carry around, make sure you don't have it with you. Each time you have a negative craving, indulge in your new, positive habit. For instance, chew gum instead of biting your nails.

  5. Step 5

Keep a stress ball, or something else that you can squeeze, around. If you have a craving, squeeze the stress ball instead.

  6. Step 6

Get your friends on board with your plan. Your friends will keep you in check. Your friends will tell you to stop if they see you indulging in your habit.

  7. Step 7

If you can break your habit for thirty days, you're well on your way to success!
