Things You'll Need:
- Tickets to Puerto-Rico
- Car in Puerto-Rico
-
Step 1
Decide what type of vacation you want. Renting a car and driving around will give you plenty of flexibility.
-
Step 2
Buy a ticket to Puerto-Rico. Most airlines have flights to this Island from North America and Europe, including Air Canada, British Airways, Continental, American Airlines, Lufthanza, and others.
-
Step 3
Create a list of destinations in Puerto-Rico you want to visit. My recommendation will be the following: San Juan downtown, El Yunque Rainforest, Arecibo Observatory, Ponce, Camuy Caves
-
Step 4
Print yor maps or buy a GPS - you will need them!
-
Step 5
Make a reservation for the car. Mid size is usually enough, just make sure it has an air conditioner - it is hot down there! All big companies have their operations in San Juan, as well as several small local providers.
-
Step 6
Make a reservation for the hotel. I suggest staying in San Juan, though it can become expensive. Most of destinations you will be able to visit and come back in one day.
-
Step 7
Take your flight. Since the island is “unincorporated territory” of the United States, expect the standard US customs procedures either in your departing airport (like Toronto, for example) or in San Juan.
When you arrive - take a shuttle to the rental car company and pickup your vehicle. -
Step 8
Day one - El Yunque Rain Forest
The park is full of hiking trails, so prepare for the day - comfortable clothes and shoes. Take some water with you. -
Step 9
Drive to Rain Forest. It will take you about 1 hour, depending on traffic - the distance is about 60km.
-
Step 10
Enjoy the forest, take several hiking trails, do not forget to drink
-
Step 11
Drive back to San Juan and visit Downtown.
-
Step 12
Day two - Arecibo Observatory and Camuy Caves. The observatory is about 1 from San Juan. It has the largest radio telescope in the world.
Camuy caves a really the site of the great subterranean caverns carved out by the Camuy River over one million years ago. -
Step 13
Day Three - Ponce
Ponce is a very nice city, the second in size in Puerto-Rico. Has lots of beautiful places. More information here: http://www.topuertorico.org/city/ponce.shtml -
Step 14
When you are back in San Juan, visit Condado - the nice are with shops and restaurants. My recommendation - have a mofongo in Ajili-Mojili restaurant there.
-
Step 15
If you have time or play golf, visit Dorado - a small town about 45 minutes from San Juan. It has a very nice golf course and beautiful public beach.
