This article will show you a simple step by step method to carmelize onions. Carmelized onions are great as a garnish to steaks or used with puff pastry to make a tasty tart.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Heavy saucepan or skillet
  • Spatula
  • 2 TBS Butter
  • 1/4 Cup Sugar
  • 2 Large, Sweet Onions
  1. Step 1

Melt butter in saucepan or skillet over medium heat.

  2. Step 2

Add sliced or chopped onions and sugar. Stir this around with the spatula to coat the onions and help dissolve the sugar. Cover with a lid.

  3. Step 3

Saute over medium heat for 15-20 minutes, stirring frequently. As the onions saute they release their sulfur compounds. As these compounds cook they become sweet.

  4. Step 4

Onions are at their best when they brown a bit. Avoid burning.

Tips & Warnings
  • Carmelized onions go great with steak, liver, or fish.
  • As with anything you are cooking on the stove, do not leave your skillet unattended.
