make a monkey's fist

A monkeys fist is fun and easy to make. It is classified as a stopper knot and is used mainly to keep the end of a rope from fraying or for decoration (they make nice key fobs).

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rope
  • ornamental object such as a marble, bead, rock, etc. (optional)
  1. Step 1

Wrap the rope around four of your fingers.

  2. Step 2

Once there are three wraps, remove your fingers and wrap it three times around the three lengths where your middle finger and ring finger were. You can use more than three wraps for a larger knot. Pull up a little slack at a time, otherwise the knot is likely to lose shape.

  3. Step 3

Make three more turns by passing the end of the rope inside the first set of turns but outside the second set.

  4. Step 4

Insert the weight (i.e. marble, rock, etc) and tighten the rope.

Tips & Warnings
  • When tying the knot, leave plenty of room to make each of the final tucks.
