Get Rid of Melasma

Melasma is an persistent skin condition that results in hyperpigmentation (brown spots or patches), usually on the forehead, cheeks, and upper lip. While the condition causes much social distress to its sufferers, it is not physically harmful. If you, or someone you know, is a Melasma sufferer, you'll want to read the following steps to help get rid of Melasma.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR

If you suspect that you have Melasma, it is important to consult with your doctor (a dermatologist is best) to have it diagnosed. While Melasma is not usually harmful, you'll want to rule out other potentially harmful conditions.

  2. Step 2

    AVOID THE SUN

Melasma is almost always made more severe by sun exposure. Even a few minutes in the sun can affect its appearance. Use a high SPF sunscreen anytime you'll be in the sun for any length of time. For most people this would be daily.

Also, if you plan to be outdoors for an extended length of time, use a wide-brimmed hat or other protection to further shield you from sun exposure.

  3. Step 3

    CONSIDER DISCONTINUING BIRTH CONTROL PILLS

There seems to also be a hormonal component to Melasma. Many sufferers notice hyperpigmentation for the first time after going on birth control pills. If your condition is particularly distressing to you, you may want to consider foregoing hormonal methods of birth control, which could make the condition worse.

  4. Step 4

    TOPICAL APPLICATIONS

There are bleaching agents and other topical applications that reduce the severity of Melasma's hyperpigmentation. In some cases these treatments might eliminate it altogether.

Again, see your doctor or dermatologist for a recommendation of which topical treatment, many of which are available only by prescription, might be right for you.

  5. Step 5

    MSM

There is some anecdotal evidence that high doses of the supplement MSM might be effective in treating Melasma. (See link in the resources section below.) MSM is an over-the-counter supplement available at many pharmacies and health food stores.

Tips & Warnings
  • Melasma is not a "curable" condition, as much as a condition that can be managed.
  • Always contact your doctor before engaging in any kind of self treatment.
  • If you elect to discontinue birth control pills, make sure to discuss your decision with your doctor first. You'll want to engage in another reliable form of birth control in order to prevent pregnancy.
  • The Food and Drug Administration does not regulate supplements like MSM.
