How to Choose the Best Haircut for a Square Face

Finding the right hairstyle is tricky enough, but making sure that it goes with your face shape complicates things even further. While many styles can be adapted to fit all types of facial shapes, those with a square face should know what looks good on them--and what doesn't. Women usually look for styles in hair magazines, or on their favorite celebrities but they forget to take into consideration that their facial structure might not go well with that haircut. The first step in finding a great style is to know what type of bone structure you have, and then find a style that can either accentuate or play down your natural assets. These steps will give you a clearer idea of the best cut for your face.

1. Draw an outline of your face on the mirror. This method is one of the most common, and can help you determine a general style of face shapes. Look head on into the mirror, and with lipstick draw an outline of your face onto the mirror. When you step back you can see a general shape of the outline to give you an idea of your facial structure.

2. Measure your face. A more precise way of determining your facial structure is to measure the bones with a miniature tape. Begin by taking the measurements from across the cheekbones. Once you have taken the measurement, write it down. Next, measure the jaw bones from the widest point, all the way to the other widest point on the face and write it down. Then, measure the forehead in the same fashion, from widest point to widest point and write down the measurements. The final step in measuring the face is to determine the distance from the hairline to the bottom point of the chin, and write it down.

3. Determine the facial size. If your measurements show that your width and lengths are similar, that shows you have a square face. Other facial shapes include: Oval--the jaw is slightly more narrow than the temples; Round--full face and with round chin and forehead; Heart--wide cheeks with a narrow chin; Diamond--wide cheekbones but narrow chin and forehead; and Oblong--long and thin.

4. Find the right style. Anyone with a square face looks best with short or medium length hair, and often adding waviness to the hair's body can increase the softness to the face style. Parting the hair off center allows for symmetry of the face, especially when there are layers around the cheeks which can also help soften the look.

5. Avoid certain styles. There are a few styles that people with square faces should avoid, so they do not accentuate the strong chin bones. Refrain from blunt styles that end at the jawbone, or even have bangs that are cut straight across. Parting the hair down the middle can also accentuate bone structure in a more harsh manner. If the haircut is layered, make sure that its either below or above the jaw bones. Adding volume can also enhance the look, as well as give the hair more body and shape.
