Financial Help

Financial help during the holidays is important for many households, especially during times of economic downturn, job loss and inflation. Whether in the form of money, gifts for the children, meals, or utility payments, holiday financial help enables families to celebrate the season with joy -- and make it through the winter. This type of assistance is available from charities, churches, civic organizations, social programs and even family and friends.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1
    Local church
    Local church

Contact your local church and ask about assistance for needy families during the holiday season. Talk to your pastor if you regularly attend a church, but also contact larger churches in wealthier areas that may reach out to those in the surrounding communities during Christmastime.

  2. Step 2

Inquire at charitable organizations such as Catholic Charities, Salvation Army and the local food bank to find the financial assistance you need. These charities will work with you to determine your need and may provide emergency assistance for utility payments and food.

  3. Step 3
    Christmas tree
    Christmas tree

Find out which civic organizations are collecting Christmas tree gifts for needy families, and ask if they can include a wish list for your family.

  4. Step 4

Check with your utility company to find out if you may receive assistance with your electric or heating bills over the holiday season. Many utility companies accept donations for needy families over the wintertime.

  5. Step 5

Allow family and friends who offer, help your family out when times are tight. If parents or in laws ask what you need, let them know that groceries or help with the gas bill is top priority.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep an eye on the local newspaper, both the calendar and events section and the civic news. You may find out about toy drives, collections for the poor and other programs for which you may qualify.
  • Don't forget to share what you have with those less fortunate -- there is always somebody a little poorer.
