Step 1
Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Be sure that shoes fit well and costume length don't cause tripping. Also, be certain that sleeves are kept away from burning pumpkins.
-
Step 2
When shopping or preparing costumes, be sure purchase or use materials that are flame resistant. If a sword, cane or stick is part of the outfit, be certain that they aren't too long or sharp.
-
Step 3
Consider giving your child a small flashlight, and also you can apply reflective tape on their shoes for better visibility. A simple an effective solution is to use Glow sticks.
-
Step 4
At your home: remove things such as door mats, potted plants, garden hoses etc that a child may trip over. Do not water your lawn in advance of trick-or-treaters (this will not deter them from walking on your grass, instead it causes a slipping hazard). Always keep your pets restrained from being able to contact visitors.

on 12/4/2008 Even better, our local mall hosts halloween and the local church does games every year. Warm, well lit, and a public place, its safer than in the dark, still keep kids close, crowds unfortunatly can hold predators indoors or out.
