Step 1
First you'll want to have a decent-sized bag to carry around the goods. Sometimes bags marketed specifically as "diaper bags" can be somewhat pricey, so don't feel pressured to get one of those. A large purse, messenger bag, duffel bag, backpack or other similar bag will work fine. It simply needs to be able to hold all the stuff you want to bring with you. (It may be helpful to read this article and get all the stuff you'll need together and see how big of a bag you'll need before making the purchase.)

Step 2
Next, fill your bag with the absolute essentials. You will need a changing pad, diapers, wipes, a blanket, an extra outfit and whatever feeding accessories you think you will need (breastfeeding shawl, bottles, formula, etc.). To make carrying wipes easy, purchase a travel wipe holder or travel pack of wipes. When considering how many diapers to pack, it's a good rule of thumb to pack a diaper for each two hours you'll be gone, one for each hour to be more on the safe side. You can use your best judgment because you know your baby's usage better than anyone. If your baby uses a pacifier, it's a good idea to buy one specifically for the diaper bag, that way you never leave home without one.

Step 3
If you'll be gone for most of the day, you'll also want to pack a few other items. It's good to have some toys to keep baby occupied, a sweatshirt or jacket in case the weather turns cold, and some extra food, snacks and eating utensils, depending on your baby's age and needs.

on 10/31/2008 Good article. I forgot an extra set of clothing once when my toddler was sick and he threw up all over it. I don't carry a diaper bag any longer but I do keep extra clothing in my trunk.
