Want to start a medical billing and coding company? If so, you are amongst thousands of people who see the true potential in this kind of business. Doctors will always need someone to help set up and submit their medical bills. For this reason, if you establish a successful medical billing and coding company, you will always have work and be able to prosper.

From Quick Guide: Guide to Medical Coding
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take a course in medical billing and coding. This step is key even if you don't plan on doing the actual work. You must understand how medical billing and coding works in order to serve any doctor well. If you don't, you will contribute to his financial failure because a majority of his bills will be rejected or denied for payment. If you aren't sure where to go, check out the courses at your local technical school.

  2. Step 2

Get a masters of business license. This kind of license will allow you to legally go into business. You can get the paperwork at your local city hall or state website. It only takes a few minutes to fill out. There is a fee that varies from state to state, so be prepared to pay some money.

  3. Step 3

Find a location for your business. Where should you look? You should look right in your own home. Save money by working in a spare bedroom where you set up a desk, computer and Internet connection. After your business begins to grow, look for a small office. Take baby steps in order to save money on renting or buying a space.

  4. Step 4

Hire an employee. Initially, this employee should be you. However, before you get excited over all of the money you will make, understand that in the beginning you may only break even. Due to a lack of business and a slow pace, you may not be able to do a full day's work. So pace yourself and hire someone to work with you or in place of you after you've built up your clientele.

  5. Step 5

Market your medical and billing code business by dressing up in a suit and visiting local medical offices. Give them your story and a business card. Offer up your services and agree to work as backup for any medical coder they are using now. It will help you get your foot in the door and find work.

Tips & Warnings
  • Find a mentor to support you as you build your business.
  • Don't overbook yourself. You want to develop a reputation as a medical code biller who follows through with his promises and work product.
