How to Add Memory to Mac Mini

You can add memory to your Mac mini without having to send it off to an Apple technician. But first, you have to learn how to carefully open the casing on your Mac mini and identify the memory card on the mother board. These steps will guide you as you replace the memory card, without fear of damaging your Mac mini.

      Unplug any cables from your Mac mini.

      Set your Mac mini on a table, and turn the bottom face up.

      Open your Mac mini case. Slightly lift the case open with your fingers. Stick one end of a flat screwdriver in the gap. Relax your fingers and leave the screwdriver head inside of the opening.

      Use a second screwdriver to open the opposite side of the Mac mini's casing. Lever the case until it unsnaps and opens.

      Put on your anti-static wrist band. Gently remove the black cable that is plugged into the circuit board. The cable is located near the battery.

      Lift the circuit board out of the chassis. Flip the board over.

      Bend the metal hinges away from the RAM card. Lift the RAM card out. Place an upgraded RAM card in the empty slot, and push down until it snaps in. Gently bend the metal hinges back into place to secure the RAM card in place.

      Replace the casing. You are all set to use your updated memory.

Tips & Warnings

  • Mac mini computers with a double processor work best with two of the same memory cards. If you have a 512 megabyte card, make sure the other card is also a 512 megabyte card.
