The macho fern is appropriately named, due to its sturdy, massive fern fronds. The macho fern can grow to 3 or 4 feet high, and prefers to grow outside in very humid climates, usually zone 10 or higher. Macho ferns are one of the easiest ferns to grow, so many novice gardeners are thrilled with how little effort they require.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Garden soil Shovel
  1. Step 1

Pick a place to plant your fern. The macho fern prefers a partially shady spot, but will tolerate full sun. Macho ferns have been known to thrive in the Florida everglades.

  2. Step 2

Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. This will help the roots spread and grow as they mature.

  3. Step 3

Place the fern in the hole and fill with garden soil. Tamp the soil firmly, but don't compact it.

  4. Step 4

    Water the planted fern thoroughly.

  5. Step 5

Refrain from fertilizing during the first month of planting. Fertilize your plant with a 20-20-20 water-soluble fertilizer one a month.

Tips & Warnings
  • Water your macho plant every day for a week to establish the plant. After that week, water every other day.
  • Don't plant a macho fern that has yellow or rotten branches. It has a lower risk of surviving.
