A Balisong knife, more commonly known as a butterfly knife is a knife that has two handles attached to a blade which rotate and can close to conceal the blade.
Also known as a Batangas knife, it has Filipino origins from the Philippines. Those over two feet long are called Baliswords.
The knife can be used as a weapon and tricks can also be performed with it by "flipping" the blade and rotating the handles. These knives can be made at home or in a metal shop using a regular knife blade and shaped handles from either wood, animal bone or metal.

How to Make a Balisong Knife

  1. Step 1

Drill two holes into the bottom corners of your knife blade using a one-eighth-inch steel drill bit. These holes need to be large enough for a one-eight-inch rivet.

  2. Step 2

Clamp the blade into a vice. Align your first balisong handle with one of the corners. Be sure the open slot that will contain the knife blade when closed is facing out, as the handle will be installed with the knife in the "open position," when the blade is "unsheathed" and exposed.

  3. Step 3

Set up a second vice now to hold the blade handle and clamp the handle in place with the holes lined up. Heat the ends of your rivet using a simple blowtorch, then using tongs, slide the rivet through the handle and blades.

  4. Step 4

Tap down both ends of the rivet using a small ball peen hammer or rivet press, just enough to curl the metal and secure the rivet. Use enough force to create a small "bead" on the ends of the rivet. The handle needs to spin freely, and tapping too hard creates a bulge in the rivet, preventing this from happening.

  5. Step 5

Remove the knife handle from the clamp now and rotate the handle shut to ensure it closes properly. If it does not you will have to drill the rivet out using your metal drill bit. Then repeat steps 3 and 4.

  6. Step 6

Clamp the blade in place again, then align the second handle over the other blade hole. Then clamp this handle in place using your vice again, and repeat step 4 to secure this handle to the blade.

  7. Step 7

Remove the knife from the clamp after the rivet has had time to cool, and then test the knife by folding the handles back and forth. Make sure the handles "flip" or rotate easily. If they do not, you will have to drill out the rivets and start over again.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a ball peen hammer with a rivet die that creates a very small rivet curl for the best results. You can also use a rivet press and die to create a smoother more effective attachment.
  • Be careful handling the blade and using the blowtorch.
