Black Isle

You can purchase standard weapons and armor from blacksmiths and shop owners in the PC role-playing game Icewind Dale 2, but some of the best equipment has to be specially made. You can craft a lightweight suit of full-plate armor called the Beetle Shell Armor by acquiring several shells of carnivorous giant beetles.

Difficulty: Moderate

Play through to the second chapter of the game, in which the party crashes in the mountains during their airship ride.

Exit the crashed airship and trek up the north path.

  3. Step 3

Find the nest of giant beetles off to the side of the path.

Kill the beetles using a combination of melee fighters attacking directly and spell casters using magic from the back row. Examine the beetles' corpses after the battle is finished and take their shells.

Go back to the airship and talk to the gnome there named Oswald. Tell him that you want to make a suit of armor with an item you have found, then choose the dialog option to have him use the beetle shell to make the Beetle Shell Armor.

Tips & Warnings
  • The Beetle Shell Armor offers the same level of protection as a standard suit of plate mail, but it weighs significantly less.
  • Even though the armor is much lighter than normal, it will still interfere will spell casting, so do not bother equipping a wizard or sorcerer character with it.
