How to Wire a Blower 220V 3-Phase Motor

A 3-phase motor is an AC electrical motor generally found in most industrial facilities. It is used primarily to operate blowers and also fluid pumps. You would wire this motor generally as a replacement for a faulty motor.

Instructions

1. Locate the six wires coming out of the weatherhead on the motor. These are connected in different ways according to your incoming voltage.

2. Locate the three incoming "hot wires." Usually these will be connected to six of the wires coming out of the motor. There should be a tag on the motor telling you which wires to use. If there is no tag, ask the person you are buying the motor from for one.

3. Secure the connection using bolts and nuts. The connection should also be wrapped securely with electrical tape.

Tips & Warnings

• If it is a large horsepower motor, you would want to use motor joint tape first and then wrap this with electrical tape. Split bolts are a reasonable substitute for regular bolts.

• Most three-phase motors can be wired for either 480 volts or 220 volts. Make sure you read the directions attached to the motor wiring.
