There are three types of nose piercings common today. The outside of the left or right nostril is one of the most commonly used nose piercings in history and it still is today. However, septum piercings and bridge piercings are growing in popularity. The first type of piercing is done with a stud or a hoop through the outside of the cartilage of the left or right nostril. It usually takes about a month to heal, depending upon the individual's body healing abilities. A septum piercing, which is done on the center divider of the nostril, can take a month to 3 months to fully heal. This type of piercing can often be painful as it is where the nose holds many nerve endings. A bridge piercing is done through the loose skin on the top of the nose bridge between the eyes. This is often done with a curved barbell or straight barbell and is never done through bone. A bridge piercing has a higher tendency to scar.
