If you are writing your own web copy, you can take a few steps to optimize your content for search engines. Search-engine optimization (SEO) is the important process of strategically developing a website with keywords that will reap the benefits of free, natural search-engine results. Since most people begin their online search at Google, good keyword selection and SEO web copy are essential if you want your website to be discovered by potential customers. It's simple to write effective web copy by applying some search-engine optimization techniques.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Web-publishing program
  1. Step 1

Research a list of keywords for your website content. Use free online keyword tools like Google to help you determine the most popular, high-demand keywords that are not too competitive.

  2. Step 2

Determine which keywords to use. Write a web page around the keyword, using the keyword strategically at the beginning and end of the page and a couple of times in the body of the content. Include the keyword in the name of the page.

  3. Step 3

Write naturally, and include the keywords where it makes sense. SEO web copy should sound as if it were written for human readers, not just search engines. When possible, put the keyword in a title and in a link, to earn more points with the search engines.

  4. Step 4

Aim for a keyword density of between 2 and 4 percent. To determine keyword density, take the number of occurrences of your keyword and divide it by the number of words on the page.

  5. Step 5

Read and edit your web page for clarity, then publish the page with your web-publishing program.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use one keyword or keyword phrase per web page for the best results. Add more web pages for better SEO results.
  • Do not overstuff your page with keywords. If you have a keyword density over 4 percent or hide keywords on the page, the search engines will penalize you and possibly ban your site.
