Caring for a feline that has been diagnosed with diabetes takes some commitment, since the condition has to be managed every day. If you do everything right, your cat can live a normal life. Here are some pointers to keep in mind when dealing with a diabetic cat.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find a vet that has experience working with diabetic animals. The choice of doctor can really mean the difference in your feline's health. Another thing to look for when choosing a vet is their hours of operation. There are some veterinary offices that offer 24 hour emergency services. If you can find one with a good doctor, you will feel more at ease about getting care when you need it.

  2. Step 2

Give medication. Follow the directions given by your veterinarian. They will know best what to give your cat and how often that they need to take the medication. You will need to learn how to test the cats' glucose levels and give insulin shots. Be sure to tell the vet if your cat already takes any medication.

  3. Step 3

Feed your diabetic feline a proper, nutritious diet. Diabetic cats need to eat a low-carbohydrate, high-protein foods such as those that are in many canned cat foods. Canned food is better for them than dry food.

  4. Step 4

Monitor their behavior. Watch for any unusual behavior, side effects or seizures. Diabetic cats can have seizures like humans.

  5. Step 5

Get a pet sitter. You can still go places if you need to. Just simply take your feline with you or have a pet sitter handy to watch your cat while you are gone (just like having children). Be sure to give them proper directions to care for your cat. They will also need your vet's number, the certain food that they eat and their medication.

Tips & Warnings
