Tips for Self Defense With a Knife

If you decide to carry a knife or keep one in your home for self-defense, you need to know some basic handling techniques and other information. You don't want to put yourself in more danger through your lack of knowledge than you would have experienced had you been attacked unarmed. Here are some things to keep in mind when defending yourself with a knife.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a good knife. One that has a weak blade, feels awkward in your hands or is illegal to possess or carry in your state will possibly put you in more danger than being completely unarmed. Know the laws of your state regarding blade size, and know that knives that are considered switchblades are typically forbidden.

    • 2

Have a good grip. The most commonly recommended and simplest of grips is one in which you hold the knife in a fist, with your thumb over your fingers. It needs to be a comfortable tight, grip that lets you maintain control of the knife at all times.

    • 3

Watch your stance. Keep your feet shoulder-width apart, and make your knife-holding hand the forward hand. You may face your opponent or turn your body at a sideways angle to his, depending on your situation and your comfort with each position.

    • 4

Know your goal. Is it simply to distract the attacker enough to get away? Or does your situation require a deadlier response? For distraction, a quick and rapid strike will be best. If you are in a dire position, know that some of the most vital areas to attack will often be guarded. So consider going for targets on the body, such as the neck, chest, abdomen, under the ribs, the inner arms and the back of the thigh (as cutting tendons can incapacitate an opponent).

    • 5

If your opponent is similarly armed with a knife, you need to know how to block and anticipate being cut. Knife fighting is not terribly different than regular fighting. Similar jabs and blocks are useful to know.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are serious about defending yourself with a knife, get a feel for it by practicing with safe plastic knives. It's a good way to learn different grips, stances and techniques. Choose a knife carefully, making sure it is a good fit and legal in your state.
