Old Couch

As comfortable as it may be, your couch is going to wear out sooner or later. When it comes time to replace it, you'll need to move it out in order to make room for the new one. This is an easy job if you own a truck. For everyone else, the only option is to call someone to pick up that old couch to haul it away. The question is, who do you call? Follow these simple steps to understand the options you have for calling someone to pick up that old couch.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact the company you bought your new couch from. This is usually the easiest option. If your new couch is being delivered, you usually have the option of having them take away your old couch. Sometimes this service is provided for free, other times there will be a small fee. Talk to the business you purchased your new couch from to see what arrangements can be made.

Call some of the churches in your town. Most churches accept donations of household items that will be distributed to those in need. Some of the larger churches even operate thrift shops to raise money for their community programs. These are good prospects for donating your old couch. Not only will the furniture be out of your way, but you'll get a tax deduction as well.

Look up the number for the Public Housing Authority in your area. Call them to find out about any housing thrift stores in your town. Habitat for Humanity and HUD often operate thrift stores where people can purchase furniture and household items very cheaply. These shops are very popular among low-income families who may not be able to afford the cost of a new couch. If there is such a thrift shop in your area, they will be happy to come pick up your old couch or anything else you care to donate (see Resources below).

Contact charitable thrift organizations in your area. Goodwill and the Salvation Army are excellent choices. These organizations operate large thrift stores as a charity, and also distribute items directly to those who need them. Sometimes these groups have a dedicated delivery driver who will pick up your items free of charge. Other times they will refer you to someone who will pick up your couch for a small fee. It really varies from one location to the next, so you have to call your local office to find out if they do free pick ups (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings

  • Instead of calling someone to pick up your old couch, you can list it as a free item in the classified ads section of the newspaper. People will call you and will be happy to pick the couch up and use it in their home.
