How to Dispose of Fluorescent Bulbs
Fluorescent light bulbs, especially the low-energy-use bulbs, are becoming extremely popular. In some places, traditional light bulbs are being legislated out of existence and the new low-wattage fluorescent bulbs are now required. The problem, however, is that the new fluorescent bulbs contain a tiny amount of mercury, a dangerous element that can theoretically poison our groundwater supply if used bulbs are not disposed of properly. Contact your local waste disposal authority to learn if it is permissible for you to include fluorescent bulbs in your local trash (see Resources below).

Double-bag used fluorescent bulbs inside two plastic trash bags. Try not to break bulbs. Place the double-plastic bag out with your normal trash if local ordinances permit (see Resources below).

Clean up broken fluorescent bulbs carefully. Have people and pets leave the area of the broken bulb. Open widows, but do not run central heating or air conditioning. Use stiff paper or cardboard to scoop up large pieces of broken glass on hard floors. Use duct tape to pick up small glass shards. Dispose of duct tape and large glass pieces in double plastic bags. Wipe area with wet paper towels or wet wipes and dispose of in a double plastic bag.

Clean up broken fluorescent bulbs on carpeted areas using paper towels to pick up larger pieces of glass. Use duct tape to pick up small fragments. Vacuum area and then place all glass, paper towels, duct tape as well as vacuum cleaner bag into double plastic trash bags and seal.

Tips & Warnings
Do not be afraid to use fluorescent light bulbs. The amount of mercury used in each bulb is incredibly small. Using fluorescent bulbs results in a net reduction in environmental mercury contamination due to their long life and reduced electrical usage.
Do not incinerate any fluorescent bulb.
