Best Way to Put Hair Extensions In

Hair extensions can be a great way to add length to your hair and give you more options for styling. This can be useful for a formal event such as a prom or "black tie" dinner. Adding your own hair extensions can be complicated as well as messy. The extensions will also be very noticeable if they're not added correctly. Once you know the proper technique, though, you can add hair extensions without a great deal of stress.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Human hair extensions Hair extension glue Tail comb (with a metal end) Hair clips Blow dryer with a nozzle Scissors
      • 1

Before starting, create a plan as to where the extensions should be placed in order to have a realistic look.

      • 2

Use the tail comb to create a straight line in your hair, starting underneath and working your way up. Clip the excess hair out of the way.

      • 3

Cut the extension to fit the line that you have created on your head. Spread a thin layer of glue on the top of the extension.

      • 4

Press the glue directly onto your scalp.

      • 5

Set your hair dryer to cool and point the nozzle directly where the extension is glued. Dry the glue with the cool air for about 30 seconds while pressing the extension to your head. If you let go of the extension, it may slip out of position or fall out completely.

      • 6

Let down some of your clipped hair and create another clean line to place the next extension.

      • 7

Continue until you have added all of the hair extensions.

    Tips & Warnings

    • This technique may take a couple of days but you must only wash or wet your hair sparingly. Try to match the extension color to your natural color as closely as possible. Always leave a good amount of hair without extensions on the top of your head and in the front so that the extensions will look like natural hair. If the hair extensions loosen or start to come out on an end, you can simply bobby pin them back in for a temporary fix

    • The hair extensions will come out on their own after a couple of days but you can use an essential oil or conditioner to loosen the glue if you want them out sooner. The only way to add permanent hair extensions is to visit a salon. They will either sew your extensions in or use a "glue and heat" technique. Don't use synthetic extensions as they cannot be flat ironed or curled. They will melt.
