Where to Buy Bike Paint

Paint

One of the great things about bicycles is that they will last virtually forever with proper care and maintenance. You can always replace tires and rims, buy a new chain and even put fresh grips on the handlebars. The main maintenance item is the paint, since it will undoubtedly become scratched over time, and scratches in the paint will allow rust to develop on the metal. Painting the bike is actually very easy, but finding the paint you need can sometimes seem like a challenge.

Instructions

Visit your local paint store. This may sound like an obvious suggestion, but the thought of going to Sherman Williams or a similar paint retailer never occurs to many people. While there, remember that you will need to purchase a primer, paint and a clear coat to finish painting your bike. Employees at the store should be able to direct you to paint that is formulated to use on metal.

Go to one of the hardware stores in your area. All hardware stores have a minimum selection of paints. Go to the section for spray paints and look for the Rustoleum products. Rustoleum's "Painters Touch" is a great spray-on primer to use on your metal. Select a can of paint color from their "American Accents" line to go on top of the primer, and also buy a can of clear coat to spray on top of the paint when it is dry. If the Rustoleum products are not available, Krylon X-Metals is another good paint to use on bikes.

Check the Yellow Pages in your local telephone directory to see if there is a bike shop in your area. Some communities have a store that specializes in bikes. If you are fortunate enough to have one in your area, visit this store to see what paint options they have available. These shops often have paint that is specially formulated to use on bikes, although it may cost a little more than standard paint.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure to completely sand away any old paint before applying a new coat.
